Goan Crab Sukhem / Sukkha

'Sukehm' / 'Sukkha' refers to as 'dry'. A simple and easy dry Goan preparation of crabs. Even though this dish is very simple and quick to cook, cleaning the crabs will take some time.

Ingredients

  • 6 Crabs (I used live blue crabs)
  • 4 tbsp Coconut oil
  • 2 Dry Kashmiri chilies
  • 6 Garlic cloves (chopped)
  • 1 Ginger (chopped)
  • 3 medium sized Onion
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 2 Green chilies (chopped)
  • 2 tbsp Tamarind (soaked in some water)
  • 1 tbsp Jaggery (cane)
  • 1/3 Cup Fresh grated coconut

Instructions

  • 1 Wash the crabs.
  • 2 Clean them. (See recipe notes below on How To Clean Crabs step wise link).
  • 3 Separate the crab claws and the body parts.
  • 4 In a skillet, add oil. Add kashmiri chilies, garlic, ginger , onion. Fry for about 5 minutes.
  • 5 Add the chili powder, turmeric powder, green chilies, slat, tamarind water and jaggery piece. Mix well.
  • 6 Add the crabs and coconut. Mix well.
  • 7 Cover and cook for about 8-10 minutes.
  • 8 Keep lid of the skillet open and cook till this preparation is dry.
  • 9 Sprinkle coriander leaves. Enjoy!
