Green Beef Curry with Potatoes

This is a mildly spiced Goan beef curry loaded with potatoes. Very much loved by the kids due to the potatoes in the gravy.

Ingredients

For the Green Masala:-
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1/2 inch Cinnamon stick
  • 8 cloves
  • 10 Black Peppercorns
  • 1/2 inch Ginger Piece (roughly chopped)
  • 6 Garlic cloves (roughly chopped)
  • 1/2 Onion (roughly chopped)
  • 2 Green chilles (roughly chopped,see recipe notes below for kid friendly )
  • 1/2 cup Coriander leaves (tightly packed)
  • 2 marble size Tamarind Balls
  • 1 tsp White sugar
Other Ingredients:-
  • 500 gms Beef, cut into cubes
  • 4 tbsp Oil
  • 1 medium sized Onion (sliced)
  • 1 medium sized Tomato (chopped, optional)
  • 2 medium sized Potatoes (make medium sized cubes)

Instructions

  • 1 Wash the meat and cut into 1/2 inch or 1 inch cubes. Apply salt and keep aside.
  • 2 Put all ingredients mentioned under 'For the Green Masala' in a mixer grinder. Using 1/2 cup water, grind masala into fine paste. Keep aside.
  • 3 In a vessel, heat oil and fry onion till soft. Then fry tomato till soft. Add the ground masala and fry for 2 minutes.
  • 4 Add the beef. Mix well.
  • 5 Cook for 5 minutes. Then add 3 1/2 cup water. Cover vessel and cook for 20 minutes. (If you want a thinner gravy consistency, add 4 1/2 cups water).
  • 6 After 20 minutes ,add potatoes.
  • 7 Cover and cook for another 15 minutes or until the meat is cooked. Green beef is ready.
  • 8 Enjoy this meat dish with goan pao / steamed rice / pulao / chapati.

  4. You can increase the spice level by increasing the quantity of green chilies to 4.
  5. Add 1 green chili for kid friendly version of this dish.
