Mangalore Buns (Mangalore Banana Poories)

These buns are a popular breakfast and tea time snack in Udupi-Mangalore region. Mangalore Buns are sweet, soft, fluffy banana pooris .Most of the restaurants in Mangalore serves these buns as a breakfast item as well as an evening snack. Do give this recipe a try, simple and easy.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cup Wheat flour
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/4 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1 Large Over ripe Banana (if small use 3-4 bananas)
  • 4 tbsp Curds (yoghurt)
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • Oil (for deep frying)

Instructions

  • 1 In a bowl, mix together wheat flour, cumin seeds, salt and baking soda. Keep aside.
  • 2 In another bowl, mash the banana, yoghurt and sugar together to form a paste.
  • 3 Mix the banana mixture into the flour mixture.
  • 4 Knead it to a slightly hard dough as compared to chapati dough. (Add more curds little by little if required during kneading). Apply oil for the dough, cover it and leave it aside to ferment for 4 hours.
  • 5 After 4 hours, divide dough into 6 parts. Apply oil to rolling pin and surface on which you are going to roll the ball. Roll the ball into poori size, thick enough.
  • 6 In a deep frying pan, heat sufficient oi and deep fry pooris on medium low heat till nice and golden brown on both sides.
  • 7 Enjoy at breakfast or tea time.
