Pepper Rava Fried Mussels (Xinaneao)

‘Mussels in Goa are referred to as ‘Xinaneao’. Mussels are a delicacy in Goa. You can cook them in different ways. This recipe shows you to prepare mussels by marinating them in pepper and then frying them in rava (semolina). This is a popular dish served as an appetizer in Goan restaurants and shacks.

  • 20 Fresh Mussels (See Recipe notes below on ‘How To Clean Mussels’)
  • 1 tsp Black pepper powder
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tbsp Lemon juice
  • 1 Egg (lightly beaten with 1 tbsp water)
  • Rava (fine semolina, as required)
  • Oil (for shallow fry)
  • Lime slices (to serve)


  • 1 Wash and clean mussels. (See Recipe notes below on 'How To Clean Mussels'). Keep them aside.
  • 2 Add salt, lime and pepper powder. Mix lightly.
  • 3 Open and spread the mussels on a plate as shown.
  • 4 Dip mussels in egg.
  • 5 Then coat with rava.
  • 6 Heat sufficient oil in a skillet and shallow fry the mussels. Cook for 2 minutes on one side till you get a nice golden color.
  • 7 Then flip on the other side and cook for another 2 minutes.
  • 8 Serve hot with lime. Enjoy the rava fried mussels with a dash of lime!
