Recheado Masala Mussels (Xinaneao)

Mussels in Goa are referred to as ‘Xinaneao’. Mussels are a delicacy in Goa. You can cook them in different ways. This recipe shows you to prepare mussels by cooking them in Goa’s popular red masala, the ‘Recheado Masala’. This is a dish served as an appetizer in Goan restaurants and shacks.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • 1/2 medium sized Onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 tbsp Recheado masala (See Recipe Notes below for Recheado Masala Recipe)
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 10 Pieces Fresh Mussels (See Recipe notes below on ‘How To Clean Mussels’)
  • 1 Green chili (finely chopped)
  • 2 tbsp Coriander (finely chopped)

Instructions

  • 1 Wash and clean mussels. (See Recipe notes below on 'How To Clean Mussels'). Keep them aside. Retain 10 half shells(cleaned and washed well) of the mussels for presentation.
  • 2 In a pan, add oil. Fry onions till soft. Add the green chilies. Stir in the Recheado masala, fry for 30 seconds.
  • 3 Add the mussels and salt. Cover and cook for 5 minutes.
  • 4 Keep open and cook till almost masala coats the mussels. Add the coriander. Mix well.
  • 5 Place one mussel in one half shell along with little masala in them. Serve and enjoy!!!
