Shark Fish Ambot Tik

Ambot Tik is a Portuguese influenced dish. The meaning of ‘Ambot’ is sour and ‘Tik’ is spicy in Portuguese. Here dry kokum is used as the souring agent and red dry chilies for spice.

Ingredients

For Ambot Tik Masala:-
  • 12 Dry red Kashmiri chilies
  • 1 tsp Black Pepper Corns
  • 5 cloves
  • 2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 4 Garlic cloves
  • 1 inch Ginger Piece (roughly chopped)
  • 1 inch Cinnamon stick (roughly chopped)
Other Ingredients:-
  • 1 Kilograms Shark fish
  • 1 tsp Turmeric
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • 1 medium sized Onion
  • 2 Tomatoes ( pureed)
  • 12 Dry Kokum

Instructions

  • 1 Clean and cut fish into desired pieces. Apply salt and turmeric and keep aside for at least 15 minutes.
  • 2 Grind masala using all ingredients under 'for ambot tik masala', using sufficient water to make a smooth masala paste. Keep aside.
  • 3 In a vessel, add oil and fry onion till soft. Add the tomato puree and fry for 5 minutes.
  • 4 Add the masala paste. Fry for 2 minutes.
  • 5 Add sufficient water (about 2 cups). Bring it to a boil.
  • 6 Add the shark fish and dry kokum. (Here kokum is used as the souring agent)
  • 7 Cook for 5-7 minutes till fish is cooked. Serve hot with steamed rice.
