Simple Masoor Dal

Without fish, curry and rice, no lunch meal is complete for a Goan. For those days when fish isn’t available in market, this simple dal is usually prepared along with rice, vegetable and some pickle to go with.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 4 Garlic cloves (chopped)
  • 2 Green chillies (chopped)
  • 1/2 Onion (chopped)
  • 2 tbsp Coriander (chopped)

Instructions

  • 1 Wash the masoor dal. Pressure cook it with 2 cups water with salt and turmeric powder on HIGH flame for one whistle. Keep it aside.
  • 2 In a pan, add oil, add the mustard seeds. Allow them to splutter. Add the cumin seeds, allow them to sizzle. Add onion, garlic cloves and green chillies. Fry till onion turns brown.
  • 3 Add the dal, adjust the water and salt.
  • 4 Bring it to a boil. Add the coriander leaves.
  • 5 Serve hot with rice.
