Stuffed Crabs (Goan Style)

Stuffed crabs are a favorite at our home even though there's a lot of work involved in preparing them. You can make stuffed crabs in different ways. This is one way, that uses a simple Goan chili fry styled filling, crumb coated and then baked.

Ingredients

  • 4 large Crabs (I used blue live crabs)
  • 1 large Onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 Green chilies (finely chopped)
  • 3 Cloves of garlic (finely chopped)
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tbsp Vinegar
  • 1 large Potato (boiled, peeled and grated)
  • Salt (as required)
  • 1 Egg (beaten well and mixed with 1 tbsp water)
  • Bread crumbs (for coating)
  • 2-3 tbsp Butter (melted)

Instructions

  • 1 Wash the crabs.
  • 2 Cook crabs in water with salt and about 1 tsp peppercorns , boil for 15 minutes.
  • 3 Remove shell from body part of the crab. Clean and wash the crab shells and keep them aside. (We will use them for the stuffing).
  • 4 Remove all the meat from the crabs.
  • 5 In a pan, add oil, garlic, green chilies and onion. Fry till onion turns soft. Add turmeric powder.
  • 6 Add the crab meat. Mix well. Add the vinegar and salt as required.
  • 7 Add the grated potato.
  • 8 Mix well and put off the flame. Allow mixture to cool for about 15 minutes.
  • 9 Preheat oven for 400 deg F (200 deg C). Oil the inside of the crab shells. Stuff the shells generously with the filling.
  • 10 Brush with egg wash on top of the stuffing. Coat with bread crumbs. Place them on a baking tray. Pour melted butter all over the bread crumbs. Bake for 15-18 minutes and then switch on top heat (broil ) for 1-2 minutes.
