Dry Prawns Goan Chilly Fry

Goans used techniques for drying fish and storing it at room temperatures due to the absence of refrigerators at earlier times so they could use dried fish/prawns during the monsoons when fresh fish was not available. So here's a recipe for dried prawns chilly fry (not to be confused with prawn kismur dish) which is enjoyed by Goans with rice and Goan curry.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Dried prawns/shrimps (clean and remove the heads)
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 1 large Onion (sliced)
  • 1 Green chili (chopped)
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/4 cup Grated fresh coconut
  • 2 tbsp Vinegar

Instructions

  • 1 Soak the dried shrimps in 1 cup water for about 15-20 minutes.
  • 2 Heat oil in a skillet. Fry onions, salt and green chilies till onion turn soft.
  • 3 Drain the soaked shrimps from water . Fry them for 3 minutes.
  • 4 Next, add turmeric powder along with coconut. Mix well.
  • 5 Add 1/4 cup water, cover skillet and cook for 10 minutes.
  • 6 Add vinegar. Fry for another 2 minutes till the chilly fry is dry.
  • 7 Serve along with rice and curry. (See Recipe notes below).
