1 |
Apply ½ tsp salt to prawns and leave aside for about 15 mins.
Grind all ingredients under ‘curry masala paste’ using sufficient water to form a smooth paste. Keep aside.
|
|
2 |
Next, Grind all ingredients under ‘Masala Coconut Milk’ using sufficient water and strain thick milk from it.
Grind the coconut that has been strained again with some water and extract thin milk from it. Keep them aside.
|
|
3 |
Now you will have Curry masala paste, thick and thin coconut masala milk. |
|
4 |
In a vessel, add oil. Fry the onion till soft, add the curry masala paste along with 1 tsp salt. Stir fry for 2-3 minutes. |
|
5 |
Now, add the prawns and ladyfingers. Fry for a minute. |
|
6 |
Pour in the thin coconut milk. |
|
7 |
Cover vessel with lid and cook for about 10 minutes till prawns and ladyfingers are cooked. Add the thick coconut milk, bring it to a boil and put off the flame. |
|
8 |
Serve with hot steamed rice. |

Can u give the recipe for making curry masala paste that can be freezed and used when required as sometimes we run sort of time to make it fresh everytime. Thanks.
Hi Albina,
PLease have a look at this Recipe of mine Curry Paste you can just do the Step one and freeze it for future use 🙂
My vegetarian roommates were out last week and decided to cook as much non veg as I could. This was the first on the list. What I liked about all this receipe was that they are so simple and easy for Ametures like me. I had some friends home and they really liked the curry. Used mango Insted of bhindi which gave a tangy flavor to it. Thanks again for such a lovely recipe.
Hi Satish
Glad that you finally got a chance to try out the non veg dishes:)
Well, here’s the recipe with fish and raw mango…

Xanti do you know how to make formias made in Goan bakery.. Please share your recipe.
Hi Sharmil
Im still working on the recipe ..Will post as soon as im done with it 🙂
Can I use the ground coconut paste directly instead of extracting the coconut milk?
Hi Sushmita
We have an masala orange paste and a separate coconut extracted milk mixture in this …
Xanti one more question did you first saute the lady fingers in some oil and added to the curry paste..with the fresh prawns as they look to me in the picture where as in does not say..just a doubt..
Hi Leena
yes, step 5 says , fry prawns and ladyfingers for a minute. . Add ladyfingers raw at step 5 (not fried before)
I have tried a lot of recipes for prawn & ladyfinger curry. I think this is one of the best that I have come across so far. The recipe is very well written. And I love the idea of having a curry masala paste, n then simmering with coconut milk layer. Normally people juz grind the masala with the coconut and add the entire mixture or its extract. This combination gives a very delicate n wonderful flavour that I have begun to love. I’m going to try your recipe with the raw mango next. Thank you!
Hi Reena
Happy to know that you preferred this method and the curry tuned out good for you . Yes , sure do try the mango curry and also check the other Goan recipes too 😊👍🏻Thanks for writing to me and sharing your feedback

Hi Xanti,
Could we substitute coconut milk with milk?
Hi Delia
No, please use coconut milk only…
Hi Xanti
Last week I had tasted this prawns and bende combination curry delicacy in hotel ritz ,Panaji, Goa and it was out of the world. I immensely liked it. I am from Mangalore and we use dried and raw prawns combination with moge(mangalore cucumber), raw/ripe mango, but never knew about this bende prawns curry. So thought of preparing this delicious curry and for the recipe I googled and found in ur blog, the exact recipe which I had tasted in Ritz. Thank u..next week I am going to prepare this yummy mouth watering curry. Bende I have already bought..fresh prawns I have yet to bring…. till then…. bye…

Can one use tomatoes also in addition to the ingredients in your recipe for prawn curry!
Hi David
We can use tomatoes but not so commonly used in goan curry , depends on each ones taste.
Thank you for the recipe Xanti😊 I wanted to make this curry for the longest time and it turned out just the way I wanted it.

Hey Xanti, tried this recipe today the taste was great but my curry didn’t turn as red as urs it was more light orange .what am I doing wrong ?
Thanks
Hi Karishma
Your not doing anything wrong if your following the recipe correctly which I’m sure you are 😊
Usually the color (darker orange ) or lighter depends on the Kashmiri chilies used .

Is it possible to use canned coconut milk? I live in the US and would love to find a way to leverage items readily available in the grocery store. We don’t always have the luxury of getting fresh coconut. Additionally, this would save a lot of time. Thank you! I can’t wait to try your recipes.
Hi Sharon
I too live in the US … I too don’t get the luxury of getting fresh coconut 😊…
all my recipes on my website are created here in the US with Ingredients available here, use frozen grated coconut which is easily available in the Indian stores .
Tried your bhendi Prawn curry recipe, worked out very well, lunch was delicious.
