Chicken Cafreal

Chicken Cafreal is a traditional Goan dish. Chicken Cafreal is a dry chicken dish cooked in green marinade made with fresh herbs and spices. The preparation originated from the Portuguese colonies.

Ingredients

  • Cafreal Masala (See Recipe Notes below for Cafreal Masala Recipe)
  • 1 Kilograms Chicken (cut into medium or large pieces)
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 1 Lime (squeeze juice)
  • 4 tbsp Oil
  • 2 large Onion (Cut into rings)
  • 2 large Potatoes (Boiled and sliced into rings)
  • 2 tsp Pepper powder

Instructions

  • 1 Prepare cafreal masala for 1 kilograms Chicken. (See recipe notes below for masala recipe link).
  • 2 Apply salt, lime to chicken and keep aside for 10 minutes. Apply the cafreal masala to the chicken. Keep aside for atleast 20-30 minutes. (Use same vessel to marinate in which you will cook the chicken)
  • 3 Sprinkle 2 tbsp oil over marinated chicken and cook covered for 20 minutes, then open lid and cook till chicken turns brown and masala starts to dry up.
  • 4 Remove chicken onto a serving tray and use same vessel to fry onions with 2 tbsp oil till the onions turn soft. Sprinkle pepper powder over it. Remove the onions from vessel and arrange over the chicken.
  • 5 In same vessel, add 2 tbsp oil and fry boiled potato slices till browned on both sides. Sprinkle 1 tsp pepper powder over it and arrange them over the chicken and onion.
  • 6 Chicken cafreal is ready !
  • 7 Serve!
