Goan Prawn Curry with Ladyfingers

In Goa, Xitt Kodi (Rice & Curry) is the staple diet of every Goan. Goans eat fish curry along with rice, fried fish and a vegetable almost every day. No lunch meal is complete without the Goan Curry and rice. So here’s the authentic Goan Curry Recipe that uses prawns and ladyfingers.

Ingredients

For Curry Masala Paste:-
  • 1/4 cup Fresh grated coconut
  • 4 Garlic cloves
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 4 Kashmiri dry chillies
  • 1 Tamarind (marble sized ball)
For Masala Coconut Milk:-
  • 1/4 cup Fresh grated coconut
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tbsp Coriander seeds
  • 1 Green chili (roughly chopped)
Other Ingredients:-
  • 20 medium sized Prawns
  • 10 Ladyfingers (cut into 1 inch long pieces)
  • 1 Onion ( sliced)
  • Salt (as required)
  • 2 tbsp Oil

Instructions

  • 1 Apply ½ tsp salt to prawns and leave aside for about 15 mins. Grind all ingredients under ‘curry masala paste’ using sufficient water to form a smooth paste. Keep aside.
  • 2 Next, Grind all ingredients under ‘Masala Coconut Milk’ using sufficient water and strain thick milk from it. Grind the coconut that has been strained again with some water and extract thin milk from it. Keep them aside.
  • 3 Now you will have Curry masala paste, thick and thin coconut masala milk.
  • 4 In a vessel, add oil. Fry the onion till soft, add the curry masala paste along with 1 tsp salt. Stir fry for 2-3 minutes.
  • 5 Now, add the prawns and ladyfingers. Fry for a minute.
  • 6 Pour in the thin coconut milk.
  • 7 Cover vessel with lid and cook for about 10 minutes till prawns and ladyfingers are cooked. Add the thick coconut milk, bring it to a boil and put off the flame.
  • 8 Serve with hot steamed rice.
