Pumpkin & Prawn Goan Curry (Doodhi Roce/ Caldinha)

Caldine curry is a popular Goan non-spicy yellow curry. Pumpkin & Prawn Curry is also commonly known as ‘Doodhi ani Sungta Roce’ in Goa. Doodhi Roce is very common during wedding time(Bhikra Jevonn/ Family food). You can also prepare Caldine by adding some vegetable along with fish. Caldine curry is served with rice.

Ingredients

For Curry:-
  • 1 cup Coconut (About 1 grated coconut)
  • 6 Garlic cloves (roughly chopped)
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1 tbsp Coriander seeds
  • 4 cloves
  • 1 inch Cinnamon stick
  • 2 Cardamom (green)
  • 6 Black Pepper Corns
Other Ingredients:-
  • 500 grams Pumpkin, 1 inch cubed
  • 20 large Prawns
  • 1 medium sized Onion (chopped finely)
  • 2 Green chillies (Slit)
  • Salt (as required)
  • 2 tbsp Oil

Instructions

  • 1 Cut the pumpkin and apply ½ tsp tsp salt and keep aside for at least 15 minutes.
  • 2 Apply ½ tsp salt to prawns and keep aside.
  • 3 Grind all ingredients ‘for curry’ in a mixer grinder using sufficient water and extract thick milk. Again grind it with more water and extract thin milk. Keep it aside.
  • 4 In a vessel, add oil, fry onion till soft. Add thin coconut milk, bring it to a boil. Add prawns. Add the Pumpkin pieces. Cook till prawns and pumpkin are cooked.
  • 5 Adjust the salt. Add the green chilies. Add the thick coconut milk. Bring to a boil and put off gas.
